Prop production

STMEDIA can help you with custom props for your video production. We have experience producing parts, tools and products. Our movie props look great, are designed to work with video production and can actually function.

BENEFITS OF 3D PRINTED PROPS

3D printed props are designed to your requirements. These can be visual requirements, but also functional.

  • Visual requirements: 3D printed video props can look completely convincing. Depending on other requirements, 3D printed props can have huge details, and look super smooth without the known “3D printed layers”. Using various painting techniques, 3D printed parts can look like steel, worn or have other great surface finishes.
  • Made for videoproduction: As videocreators ourselves, we know what works and doesn’t work. When parts need tracking, we are able to add easy to trace elements to props which can later easily be.
  • Functional props: OK, we can’t build a working time-machine. But our props can sometimes actually have functionalities. Think of adjustable parts, interaction with other props on set like it functions as a tool, or added robotic functions. We do not create electric Arduino/Raspberry pi solutions, but they can be integrated if you have a resource for this.

SAMPLE PROJECTS

SCAN-GUN FOR SUBHUMAN

STMEDIA was asked to create several props for the movie Subhuman, by Arjen Schotel. The prop was painted in a heavily used look. On the left it featured a display with an easy to track white surface. When the trigger was pressed, the scanner on the top would extend. This was done using a locking mechanism and an elastic band.

WRIST-MEASURING WEARABLE

Another prop for the movie Subhuman. was a measuring tool worn on the wrist. This device also contained a big trackable display. The tool contains 2 parts with an internal rubber band. Using this system, the user can expand both parts, put his hand through and clamp the wrist piece. This way, the wearable will fit people with thin arms, up to bigger people who might be wearing a thick jacket.

VR HAND MODULE

For a company vision video of SAP Software solutions, we’ve created a hand module showing the tracking of hand movements in a physical space. The parts were printed in PLA. The big benefit of this material is that it starts to get soft around 80 degrees °C. The part was printed flat, heated and shaped around the hand of the user for a custom fit.
